Federal Appliance Standards

The standards apply to all major appliances, and state that appliances produced must adhere to minimum standards of energy efficiency.

Program Administrator:
US Department of Energy (DOE); Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE)

Applicable to:

  • Major appliances (clothes washers, dishwashers, refrigerators, dehumidifiers, ceiling fans, water heaters, lightings, furnaces, boilers, heat pumps, central air conditioners, motors, exit and traffic signs, unit heaters, transformers)

Requirements:

  • Must adhere to minimum standards of energy efficiency as established by the U.S. Congress in the Federal Policy and Conservation Act (EPCA) of 1975, and amended by succeeding energy legislation, including the federal Energy Policy Act of 2005.
